Does Briggs and Stratton Easy Start Need Gas Mixture
Correct fuel/oil mix for lawnmower?
Can anyone tell me the correct oil/fuel mix for a fairly standard Briggs & Stratton lawnmower? I have to pick some up tomorrow morning and I never know what to say when they ask me at the Total garage. Thanks. =)

I have a Briggs and Staraton Petrol Mower and I always use 98 Octane Petrol mixed at 50:1 with two stroke oil, never failed me yet.

Is your mower 4 or 2 stroke XLR? If its a 4 stoke you don't need to add oil to the petrol. 95 unleaded is fine. If it's a 2 stroke you need to look in the owners manual for the correct mixture. I have used various 2 stroke gardening machines which have been either a 25.1 or 50.1 mixture but to say that your machine is "fairly standard" is not helpful if you want a positive response. If in doubt, take the machine to your local garden machinery shop (motoculture) and ask them what you need.

Briggs & Stratton are 4 stroke engines and do not require Oil in the fuel.
Check if you have an Oil Level Dipstick. If so make sure that the Oil level is correct and DO NOT use Oil in the Fuel.
If you DO NOT have a dipstick (highly unlikely) then 50:1 Petrol to Oil . 100 ml of Two stroke Oil to 5 Litre of unleaded Petrol
Hope this helps

as fetler says ive never heard of a b&s 2 stroke, i stand to be corrected but if it is a 4 stroke dont put oilin the petrol youll not do it any good at all
normally theyre marked 4 stroke on the engine

Yes agreed this is a 4 stroke engine and no oil is needed

Hello everyone, thank you for all your replies. I'm not sure if it's 2 or 4 stroke, 2 I think. I may well have got my facts slightly wrong. The fuel we use comes from a dedicated manual pump at the Total garage and is a blueish colour liquid. The pump itself seems to have different settings and I am always asked which one I need which is when I get stuck. So far whatever I have been given works fine but it would be nice to know the correct thing to ask for in future...

If you don't know exactly what type of machine you are you operating. It's not too difficult to work out if your machine is a 2 or 4 stroke. It should either tell you on the machine itself or in the user manual. As I said before. If you really don't know. Take the machine to your local motoculture centre and they will tell you.

Hi XLR,
Did you manage to sort your problem out with regard to correct petrol/oil mixture?

Hi. No actually, as the garage was shut on Saturday for the holiday. The fuel was so I could mow the Gite garden before the guests arrived. Since they are now here it will have to wait until next Saturday! I'll try and find the user manual this week for a definitave answer. Thanks to everyone for their input.
